Best Beaches in Havelock Island: A Practical Comparison

Short answer: there is no single best Havelock beach for every trip. Choose Radhanagar for a classic beach visit and sunset, Elephant Beach for organised water activities, Kalapathar for a scenic shore stop, and Vijaynagar for a quieter east-coast beach near several stays. If you visit only one and do not need activities, Radhanagar is the simplest all-round choice.

Havelock Island is officially called Swaraj Dweep. The Andaman and Nicobar Tourism Department currently identifies Radhanagar, Elephant, Vijaynagar and Kalapathar as the island's main visitor beaches. Conditions, swimming zones, boat access and water activities can change with weather and local instructions, so treat this as a decision guide rather than a fixed timetable.

How to choose the right Havelock beach

Radhanagar Beach: the best all-round first visit

Choose it if: you want sand, a relaxed beach visit and sunset without organising a water-sports outing.

The Tourism Department places Radhanagar on Swaraj Dweep and describes swimming and sunset watching as its main low-impact activities. Its current page also refers to netted swimming zones. Use only the zone that is visibly marked and open when you arrive. A net does not replace lifeguard or local instructions, and sea conditions can change.

Radhanagar is the most sensible single-beach choice for many first-time visitors because the beach itself is the purpose of the visit. It is less suitable if your main aim is snorkelling, sea walking or a package of organised water activities. For those, compare Elephant Beach instead.

Elephant Beach: for organised activities

Choose it if: snorkelling or other supervised water activities are the main reason for the outing.

The official Elephant Beach page lists snorkelling, sea walking and other water sports. It describes two access methods: a boat from the Swaraj Dweep side or a forest trail. Do not treat either route as guaranteed. Boat operations, trail access and activities can be stopped or changed because of weather, sea conditions or local restrictions.

Confirm what is operating before setting out, and ask what the quoted activity includes. A boat ride, beach access and an activity are separate parts of the decision. Travellers with small children, limited mobility or difficulty walking on uneven ground should check the boarding and landing arrangement as well as the trail option.

Kalapathar Beach: for a scenic stop, not a promised swim

Choose it if: you want a slower shore visit and a contrast to the busier activity beach.

The Tourism Department lists Kalapathar as a Swaraj Dweep beach and highlights its dark rocks and coastal scenery. The useful way to plan it is as a road-side beach stop for walking, sitting and photographs. Do not plan a swim merely because older guides describe clear or shallow water. Check the actual warning signs, currents and marked swimming area on the day.

Kalapathar works well when you do not want to commit to a boat outing. It may disappoint travellers expecting a full range of changing rooms, lockers, cafés or organised activities, because the level of service can change and should not be assumed.

Vijaynagar Beach: for a quieter east-coast shore

Choose it if: your stay is near Beach No. 5 or you want a shore walk away from the main Radhanagar visit.

The official page identifies Vijaynagar as Beach No. 5 on the eastern coast of Swaraj Dweep. Several accommodation properties use Vijaynagar addresses, so the beach can be convenient when you are staying on that side. Access, sand width and swimming conditions are not identical along the entire coast. Ask your property where public access is available and which stretch is currently suitable.

Because it faces east, the Tourism Department highlights sunrise rather than sunset. Do not plan a night swim or assume a quiet stretch is automatically a safe one.

What about “Secret Beach” or Neil's Cove?

Do not follow an unmarked route simply because a social post calls it “Secret Beach”. The Tourism Department's current Swaraj Dweep beach list names Radhanagar, Elephant, Vijaynagar and Kalapathar, but it does not list a visitor attraction called Secret Beach.

The old version of this guide treated Neil's Cove as a separate beach and recommended snorkelling while also mentioning crocodile sightings. That advice has been removed. I could not verify a current official visitor-access or swimming source for Neil's Cove. If a warning board, barrier or official instruction restricts access or swimming, do not enter.

Beach safety that should change your plan

The Andaman and Nicobar Police tells visitors to swim only in safe areas and not to enter the sea where crocodile warnings are displayed. The Tourism Department also advises visitors to check warning boards, ask about currents and tides, avoid swimming after dark, swim with another person and supervise children.

Read the beach, not an old blog: flags, boards, barriers and instructions on the day take priority over any online guide.
Do not swim alone: stay in the marked area and keep children within reach.
Do not enter after dark: visibility and assistance are poorer, even at a familiar beach.
Check before activities: verify weather, sea conditions, operator status and what safety equipment is provided.
Protect the shore: do not collect coral, shells or marine life, and do not leave waste behind.
Change the plan when needed: a closed trail, cancelled boat or red warning is a reason to choose another beach, not find a workaround.

A simple beach plan

Only one beach: choose Radhanagar for a general beach visit, or Elephant Beach if organised activities are the priority.
A relaxed island day: combine a Vijaynagar or Kalapathar shore stop with Radhanagar later, leaving enough road and daylight buffer.
An activity day: keep Elephant Beach as the main commitment. Do not build a tight second plan around an access mode that may change.
With a toddler or older traveller: favour road-accessible stops and confirm walking, toilet, shade and changing arrangements before leaving the hotel.
