Port Blair Airport Arrival Guide: City, Jetty or Havelock?

Short answer: Veer Savarkar International Airport is in Sri Vijaya Puram (Port Blair), not on Havelock or Neil Island. After collecting your bags, either go to a Port Blair hotel or travel by road to the jetty printed on your ferry ticket. There is no ferry terminal inside the airport.

A same-day ferry to Swaraj Dweep (Havelock Island) is sensible only when the scheduled flight arrival, possible delay, baggage collection, road transfer and ferry reporting deadline leave a comfortable margin. If one late bag or flight delay would make you miss the sailing, stay the first night in Port Blair.

What to check before leaving baggage claim

  1. Open the exact destination. Use the hotel name or the jetty written on the issued ferry ticket, not only “Port Blair”.
  2. Check the next deadline. A ferry's reporting deadline matters more than its departure time when judging a connection.
  3. Keep tickets offline. Save the hotel address, ferry ticket and contact process before the flight.
  4. Count the bags and people. A vehicle that fits two adults may not fit the same group plus large suitcases, a pram or diving luggage.
  5. Change the plan if the flight is late. Do not ask a driver to compensate for a lost connection margin.

Port Blair airport transport options

Prepaid cab

The current Andaman and Nicobar Tourism page states that prepaid cabs are available at the airport terminal. This is the simplest first option when you have several bags, children, older travellers or a ferry deadline.

Before leaving, confirm the exact destination, total amount, vehicle type and whether any parking or waiting charge is included. Keep the receipt or booking record. This guide does not publish a fixed airport fare because the destination, vehicle and official rates can change.

Hotel pickup

A hotel pickup is useful when the property is hard to identify or the group needs a larger vehicle. Ask the hotel to write the vehicle type, pickup point, total charge, waiting rule and contact method. Do not assume “airport transfer available” means it is included in the room rate.

Government bus

The Transport Department announced a multi-modal electric-bus service linking the airport with Haddo, Phoenix Bay, the bus terminus and other city points on 4 May 2024. That announcement proves the route framework, but its old timetable is not a current schedule.

Check the Directorate of Transport for local schedules, fares and route maps, or use the current ANTS portal where the required journey is listed. Use a bus for a ferry connection only after confirming today's service, stop and arrival margin.

The bus is most practical when cost matters, luggage is manageable and the connection is not tight. A family with several bags may find a direct vehicle simpler even when the bus fare is lower.

Auto-rickshaw

Official tourism information lists auto-rickshaws as a common point-to-point option within Sri Vijaya Puram. Availability at the exact airport exit and time should still be checked rather than assumed.

The State Transport Authority reiterated in November 2025 that auto-rickshaw and taxi fare meters must be fitted and maintained in working order, after complaints about drivers not switching on meters and charging excessive fares. If using an auto, ask for the meter to be switched on. Do not accept an unexplained tourist fare as an official rate.

Rented two-wheeler

The Tourism Department lists scooter and motorcycle rentals across the city and says a valid driving licence is required. This is a decision for getting around after check-in, not the easiest airport transfer with suitcases. Confirm the licence, helmet, insurance, fuel, damage and return terms before taking a vehicle.

Port Blair airport to Havelock Island

You cannot drive directly from the airport to Havelock. First travel by road to the Port Blair departure jetty, then take a confirmed passenger ferry to Swaraj Dweep. The route, date, jetty and reporting time must all match the issued ticket.

Do not assume that “Port Blair ferry terminal” identifies one place. Haddo and Phoenix Bay are separate. Government and private services also follow different ticket and reporting rules. Use the Port Blair to Havelock ferry guide for the route decision and the independent Andaman ferry guide for ticket and buffer checks.

When a same-day ferry can work

  • The flight is scheduled to arrive with a comfortable margin before the ticket's reporting deadline.
  • Every passenger and bag can move directly to the correct jetty.
  • The road transfer and pickup method are confirmed.
  • You accept the cost and inconvenience of an unplanned Port Blair night if the flight is delayed.
  • No non-refundable island activity begins immediately after ferry arrival.

When to stay in Port Blair

  • The flight lands too close to the ferry reporting deadline.
  • The flight has a connection that has been unreliable or already changed.
  • The group includes a toddler, older traveller, limited-mobility passenger or a large amount of luggage.
  • Missing the ferry would break several later hotel and activity bookings.
  • The trip is during a more variable weather period and has no spare time.

Choose the first night using the Port Blair hotel area guide. The cheapest room is not useful if its location makes the next transfer harder.

Port Blair airport to Neil Island

The same logic applies to Shaheed Dweep (Neil Island). Confirm a Port Blair-to-Shaheed Dweep service for the actual date, note the jetty and reporting deadline, then test the flight connection. Do not borrow a Havelock timetable or assume both routes leave from the same place.

If the direct sector does not fit, change the island order or stay in Port Blair. Do not create a tight, unofficial connection by joining unrelated timetable screenshots.

If your flight is delayed

  1. Check whether the ferry can still be reached before its reporting cutoff. Do not judge only by departure time.
  2. Use the change or contact process attached to that ferry ticket.
  3. Tell the transfer or hotel only after the revised arrival is known.
  4. If the margin is gone, book a city night and rebuild the island sequence before paying for another transfer.

DSS states that its sailings are subject to prevailing weather and technical conditions. Private tickets have their own rules. A delayed flight does not automatically create a ferry refund, and a ferry change does not automatically change the hotel booking.

Arrival advice for families and accessible travel

  • Ask for a vehicle that fits the people, luggage, pram and any mobility equipment.
  • Request child seating or boarding assistance before travel; do not assume it is standard.
  • Keep medicine, feeding supplies and one change of clothes in cabin baggage.
  • Avoid combining flight arrival, ferry reporting and a prepaid island activity into one chain.
  • Ask the hotel for the exact route from vehicle drop-off to the room, including steps, slopes and lift access.

Planning your departure

For most fixed mainland flights, spend the final night in Sri Vijaya Puram. This removes an inter-island ferry from departure day. It does not remove traffic or airline delay risk, so confirm the airline's current check-in guidance and leave a suitable road margin from the actual hotel.

The 5, 6 and 7-day Andaman itinerary keeps this final city night in its main plans.

Frequently asked questions

Is Port Blair airport the same as Veer Savarkar International Airport?

Yes. Veer Savarkar International Airport is the airport in Sri Vijaya Puram, commonly searched as Port Blair.

Can I get a prepaid taxi at Port Blair airport?

The current Tourism Department page says prepaid cabs are available at the airport terminal. Confirm the destination, total amount, vehicle and receipt before leaving.

Is there a bus from Port Blair airport to the ferry jetty?

The Transport Department announced airport links to Haddo and Phoenix Bay in May 2024. Do not use that old timetable as proof of today's departure. Check the current Directorate of Transport schedule or ANTS journey information before depending on it.

Which jetty should I enter in the map?

Use the jetty written on the issued ferry ticket. Haddo and Phoenix Bay are not interchangeable names for one terminal.

How long does Port Blair airport to Havelock take?

There is no honest single duration. The journey includes baggage collection, a road transfer, ferry reporting and the sailing. Each part depends on the flight, jetty, ferry and date. Plan from the ticket's reporting deadline rather than an old total-time claim.

Should I book the first night in Port Blair?

Book it when a delay would make the same-day ferry fragile. A relaxed first night is usually better than starting the trip with several bookings depending on one tight connection.
