Andaman Itinerary: 5, 6 or 7 Days Without Rushing

Short answer: for a first Andaman trip, seven days is the most balanced choice. It gives you enough time for Sri Vijaya Puram (Port Blair), Swaraj Dweep (Havelock Island) and Shaheed Dweep (Neil Island), while keeping the final night in the city before your flight.

With five days, keep it simpler: Sri Vijaya Puram and Swaraj Dweep. Six days can include one night on Shaheed Dweep, but only after the required ferry sectors are confirmed. These are planning recommendations, not official rules. Flight times, ferry operation, weather and your preferred pace can change the right answer.

First decide what your day count means

A six-night trip is not always a seven-day sightseeing trip. A late arrival can make Day 1 a transfer-and-check-in day. An early departure can make the last day unusable. Write down the scheduled arrival and departure before copying any itinerary.

Then count hotel changes. Moving from Sri Vijaya Puram to Swaraj Dweep and onward to Shaheed Dweep requires two inter-island sectors. Returning to the city adds another. Each move also means packing, checking out, reaching the jetty, reporting, sailing and checking in again. A plan that looks spacious in a list can feel rushed in practice.

Recommended Andaman itinerary for 7 days

This is the best starting plan for a first visit. It follows the core Sri Vijaya Puram, Swaraj Dweep and Shaheed Dweep sequence shown in official Tourism Department planning material, but deliberately avoids fixed ferry times. Confirm all three inter-island sectors for your dates before making restrictive hotel bookings.

What to choose on Swaraj Dweep

The district administration lists Radhanagar, Elephant, Kalapathar, Govind Nagar and Vijaynagar among Swaraj Dweep's visitor areas. That does not mean all five belong in a two-day checklist.

Choose Radhanagar for a beach-led day.
Choose Elephant Beach only when the current boat, access, activity and sea-safety arrangement works for your group.
Use Kalapathar or a nearer Govind Nagar or Vijaynagar shore as a lighter second plan, subject to current local conditions.

What to choose on Shaheed Dweep

The official district page identifies Laxmanpur, Bharatpur, Sitapur and the natural bridge formation as visitor attractions. A single-night stay does not require all of them.

Choose Laxmanpur when the sunset-side shore is the priority.
Choose Bharatpur when currently operating, organised water activities are the priority.
Choose Sitapur for a sunrise-side visit, not as a blanket swimming recommendation.
Visit the natural rock formation only with current tide and access guidance. Do not walk on or damage exposed coral.

Andaman itinerary for 5 days

Five days is enough for a worthwhile first trip if you resist adding a third base. This version keeps two useful days on Swaraj Dweep and protects the flight with a final Sri Vijaya Puram night.

Day 1: arrive and stay in Sri Vijaya Puram. Add city sightseeing only if the actual arrival leaves comfortable time.
Day 2: take the confirmed ferry to Swaraj Dweep. Keep the arrival plan light.
Day 3: use a full day for the main Havelock priority.
Day 4: choose a second beach or rest block, then return to Sri Vijaya Puram on the confirmed sailing.
Day 5: depart.

What to skip: Shaheed Dweep. One more island adds another hotel change and at least two more ferry-dependent moments: getting there and getting back to the flight city. If Neil Island matters more than Havelock, swap the island rather than squeezing in both.

Andaman itinerary for 6 days

Six days can cover the main circuit, but it is the efficiency-first version. Book it only after confirming a workable Swaraj Dweep to Shaheed Dweep sector and the return to Sri Vijaya Puram.

Day 1: arrive and stay in Sri Vijaya Puram.
Day 2: travel to Swaraj Dweep and keep the rest of the day flexible.
Day 3: full Swaraj Dweep day.
Day 4: travel to Shaheed Dweep and choose one shore priority.
Day 5: complete one more Neil Island priority, then return to Sri Vijaya Puram.
Day 6: depart.

The compromise is clear: Havelock gets only one full non-transfer day. If your group wants slow mornings, scuba, a toddler-friendly pace or more beach time, remove Neil Island or add a seventh day.

How to use 8, 9 or 10 days

Extra days should reduce fragility, not create a collection race. Start with the seven-day plan and use the additional time in one of these ways:

Add a third full day on Swaraj Dweep for rest or a weather-dependent activity.
Add another Shaheed Dweep night so its beaches are not fitted around ferry days.
Keep a proper Sri Vijaya Puram sightseeing or boat-excursion day, after confirming current access and operation.
Plan North or Middle Andaman as a separate extension with its own transport and stays.

Diglipur, Ross and Smith, Baratang and other northern stops should not be pasted into the main circuit as casual add-ons. They need a separate road, permit, boat and accommodation check. A longer route can be excellent, but only when those extra days are genuinely available.

Book the itinerary in the right order

Fix the flight dates and usable days. Record actual arrival and departure times.
Choose the number of islands. Use two bases for five days; add Neil Island when six or seven days and ferry availability support it.
Check every ferry sector. Confirm the route, direction, reporting deadline, jetty, baggage rule and change terms. Use the independent Andaman ferry guide.
Hold the final city night. This protects the flight from an inter-island disruption.
Choose the area on each island. Use the where-to-stay guide before comparing exact rooms.
Add activities last. Do not place a non-refundable sea activity immediately after a ferry arrival.

Adjustments for families and older travellers

The calmer itinerary usually wins. Reduce hotel changes before reducing beach time.

Keep Day 1 in Sri Vijaya Puram when a missed same-day ferry would create stress.
Ask the ferry service about boarding assistance and the hotel about the exact route to the room.
Confirm vehicle drop-off, walking surface, shade, toilet access and life-jacket suitability for each outing.
Do not build a toddler's day around several sunset, activity and ferry deadlines.
For a six-day family trip, consider skipping Neil Island and giving Havelock two complete days.

Adjustments for monsoon or variable weather

Use fewer island changes and more spare time. DSS states that its sailings are subject to prevailing weather and technical conditions, and private services have their own operational decisions. No itinerary can guarantee that every sea sector or activity will run.

Prefer the five-day two-base shape over a rushed three-place circuit.
Keep the final night in Sri Vijaya Puram.
Do not make a long chain of prepaid bookings depend on one ferry arriving exactly as planned.
Check official weather warnings and current transport notices close to travel.

Common itinerary mistakes

Counting arrival and departure as full days. Use the actual flight times.
Changing islands every day. Each change consumes more than the sailing itself.
Returning from an island on flight day. A ferry disruption can become a missed flight.
Booking hotels before ferries. The stay sequence must match routes that operate on the required dates.
Copying an old timetable. Current operational information and the issued ticket take priority.
Treating every named beach as a swimming stop. Follow current warning boards, lifeguards and safe-area instructions.
Adding North Andaman without enough days. It is an extension, not a spare afternoon.

Frequently asked questions

How many days are enough for Andaman?

Seven days is the best starting point for a first trip across Sri Vijaya Puram, Swaraj Dweep and Shaheed Dweep. Five days can work well with only Sri Vijaya Puram and one island. Six days fits all three places, but at a faster pace.

Can I cover Havelock and Neil Island in 5 days?

It may be physically possible on some dates, but it is usually a poor first-trip plan. Ferry and hotel changes leave little useful island time. Choose the island that matters more or add a day.

Should I visit Havelock or Neil first?

Either sequence can work only if every required sector operates on your dates. The sample plans use Sri Vijaya Puram to Swaraj Dweep to Shaheed Dweep to Sri Vijaya Puram because it avoids returning to the city between the two islands when that direct sector is available.

Should the last night be in Port Blair?

Yes for most fixed flight departures. Staying in Sri Vijaya Puram on the final night removes an inter-island ferry from flight day. It cannot remove all delay risk, but it avoids an obvious fragile connection.
