Andaman Ferry Guide: Choose Routes, Tickets and Buffers

Short answer: choose an Andaman ferry by route and timing, not by a universal “best ferry” ranking. First confirm every inter-island leg for your dates. Then compare the reporting deadline, departure jetty, total fare, travel time, baggage rule and change terms. A faster or more comfortable vessel is not the better choice if its timing creates a risky flight connection.

The usual visitor circuit links Sri Vijaya Puram (Port Blair), Swaraj Dweep (Havelock Island) and Shaheed Dweep (Neil Island). Government services are operated by the Directorate of Shipping Services, or DSS. Private passenger services use their own booking and operating rules. Schedules are operational, so this guide deliberately does not reproduce a fixed daily timetable.

Which ferry is best in Andaman?

There is no honest winner for every traveller and date. I would choose the sailing that protects the itinerary first, then compare the vessel and class. A good decision has six parts:

1. Route: it travels in the required direction without forcing an unnecessary overnight stop.
2. Timing: its reporting and arrival times fit the flight, hotel and next island leg.
3. Rules: its identity, baggage, cancellation and rescheduling terms suit the travellers.
4. Final price: the payable amount is understood for the chosen route and class.
5. Jetty: the departure location is written on the ticket and checked before travel.
6. Fallback: a delay or cancellation does not destroy the next expensive booking.

Do not rank a service using advertising claims, one old review or a timetable screenshot. Even the same service name can have different vessels, classes and rules.

Government or private ferry?

The journey-time figures are planning ranges from the Tourism Department, not promises for every vessel or route. The confirmed ticket controls. A service with an intermediate stop may take longer.

Plan the route before booking hotels

A clean first-trip sequence is often Sri Vijaya Puram, then Swaraj Dweep, then Shaheed Dweep, then back to Sri Vijaya Puram. It reduces backtracking when all three legs exist at useful times. Search the full sequence before making non-refundable stays. A seat on the first ferry does not prove that the onward ferry will work. If the Swaraj-to-Shaheed leg is unsuitable, returning through Sri Vijaya Puram or changing the island order may be safer than forcing a tight connection.

Little Andaman, Rangat, Mayabunder and Diglipur also appear in official inter-island connectivity information. These are longer, more operationally dependent journeys. Check the DSS voyage, local arrival point and onward ground plan together. Do not treat the main tourist-island ferry triangle as a template for every Andaman island.

How to book an Andaman ferry independently

1. Write the route in both common and official names. Port Blair is Sri Vijaya Puram, Havelock Island is Swaraj Dweep, and Neil Island is Shaheed Dweep.
2. Check every required leg. Search the outbound, island-to-island and return sectors before fixing accommodation dates.
3. For government services, use DSS. The official voyage enquiry provides schedule, PNR, fare and berth information. DSS also provides STARS e-ticketing.
4. For private services, compare official date-specific options. Check the route, vessel, class, final amount and all rules before payment. This guide does not send readers to a provider.
5. Enter names from the identity documents. For DSS, the same original identity document used for booking must be shown at embarkation. Check the broader passport, child-ID and permit questions before paying.
6. Save the complete ticket offline. Keep the PNR or booking reference, jetty, reporting time and contact process available without mobile data.
7. Recheck before travel. For DSS, use voyage status and recent shipping notices. For a private service, use the update method stated on its ticket.

Flight and ferry buffers

An airport arrival and a ferry departure are separate bookings. The scheduled landing time does not include a flight delay, baggage collection, road transfer, jetty formalities or the ferry reporting deadline. Do not book the last workable ferry after landing unless the full margin is comfortable and you accept an overnight stay if the flight is late. For the return, I would spend the final night in Sri Vijaya Puram before an important mainland flight. This removes a weather-dependent sea crossing from departure day.

This is an itinerary recommendation, not a published transport rule. Families with young children, older travellers, people with limited mobility and groups with several bags should keep more margin and confirm boarding assistance directly with the service.

Ticket checklist before payment

• Route and direction match the itinerary.
• Passenger names match the identity documents.
• Travel date and reporting deadline are clear.
• Departure jetty and arrival point are stated.
• Class and seat details are understood.
• Final payable amount is visible.
• Baggage allowance and handling rules suit every bag.
• Cancellation, rescheduling and refund process are acceptable.
• A contact or status-check method is provided for disruptions.

On the day of travel

• Use the reporting time on your own ticket. DSS currently requires government passengers to report two hours before sailing and closes embarkation 30 minutes before departure.
• Carry the required original identity document and an offline copy of the ticket.
• Go to the jetty printed on the confirmation. Phoenix Bay and Haddo are separate locations.
• Do not assume food, open-deck access, charging, a particular view or another facility unless it is confirmed for the booked vessel.
• Follow security and crew instructions. If you need medical advice for motion sickness, arrange it before the travel day.

If a ferry is delayed or cancelled

DSS states that its sailings are subject to prevailing weather and technical conditions. If a sailing changes, use the status, contact and refund process attached to that booking. Private services have their own terms, so do not apply a DSS rule or another operator’s promise to a private ticket.

Keep the first activity after an island arrival flexible. Avoid a sea crossing immediately before a mainland flight, international connection or another non-refundable departure.

Ferry to Andaman or ship to Andaman?

These are different travel decisions. Inter-island ferries move passengers between islands after arrival in the Andamans. Mainland passenger ships connect Sri Vijaya Puram with mainland ports and are handled by DSS as a separate sector. Do not search for a Port Blair-to-Havelock ferry when the real question is how to reach the Andamans from mainland India.

For the mainland journey, use the official Tourism Department travel information and current DSS mainland voyage tools. The availability, duration, accommodation class and reporting process are different from the tourist-island ferry system.

Can I book Andaman government ferries online?

How long are Andaman ferry journeys?

For crossings from Sri Vijaya Puram to the main tourist islands, the Tourism Department currently gives about 1.5 hours for private high-speed services and about 2.5 to 3 hours for government ferries. Other routes, vessels and intermediate stops can differ. Use the ticketed duration.

What is the Andaman ferry ticket price?

There is no single useful fare. It changes by route, date, service, vessel and class. DSS provides an official fare enquiry for government voyages. For any service, compare the final payable amount together with baggage and change terms.

Can I travel from Havelock to Neil Island directly?

Search Swaraj Dweep to Shaheed Dweep for the exact date. Do not make the hotel sequence depend on a generic timetable. Confirm that sector before fixing the stays on both islands.

Should I take a ferry on the day my flight lands?

Only if the scheduled landing, possible delay, baggage collection, road transfer and ferry reporting deadline leave a comfortable margin. If missing it would strand the trip, stay the first night in Sri Vijaya Puram.
