Andaman Water Activities: Scuba, Snorkelling or Sea Walk?
Short answer: choose snorkelling for surface-based reef viewing, introductory scuba when being underwater is the priority, sea walking when you want a guided underwater experience without choosing a scuba course, and a glass-bottom or viewing boat when you prefer not to enter the water. Kayaking is a separate paddling experience.
The right choice depends on the exact programme, your health screening, water confidence, the operator's current permission and the day's conditions. “Non-swimmer friendly” is not enough information, and there is no single age rule that applies to every Andaman scuba programme.
| Activity | Start here when | Main check before paying |
|---|---|---|
| Snorkelling | You want to look below the surface without choosing a dive programme | Water confidence, flotation, supervision, entry route and current sea conditions |
| Introductory scuba | Underwater time is the main reason for the activity | Medical form, current programme eligibility, instructor, equipment and centre registration |
| Sea walking | You want a guided underwater experience with supplied equipment | Health and age rules, access method, underwater supervision and cancellation terms |
| Glass-bottom or viewing boat | You do not want to enter the water | Boarding access, seating, sea conditions and what happens if viewing is poor |
| Kayaking | Paddling and the route matter more than underwater viewing | Route, daylight, weather, flotation, guide and return plan |
Official activity, operator, scuba and beach-safety sources checked on 5 September 2026. Registration, eligibility, sites and operation can change.
First decide what experience you actually want
Water-activity lists often put very different experiences in one row. That makes comparison harder. Separate the decision into three questions:
- Do you want to enter the water? If no, start with a viewing boat rather than allowing a seller to talk you into an underwater activity.
- Do you want surface or underwater time? Snorkelling stays at the surface. Scuba and sea walking are underwater activities with different equipment and procedures.
- Is the experience or the qualification the goal? An introductory dive is not the same as a certification course. A certified diver should ask for the programme and site appropriate to the certification and recent experience.
Do not book three similar activities only because a package combines them. One properly checked experience plus an unhurried beach day may be a better use of the island.
Scuba diving in Andaman: what beginners need to know
An uncertified traveller does not become an independent diver by buying an “intro dive”. Under the current Andaman scuba guidelines, uncertified participants are treated as trainees and may take part only in training dives. A certified diver must be able to show certification and a logbook.
Before an introductory dive, ask for the exact programme name, training-agency or regulatory category, current age rule, medical process, maximum planned depth and who will be directly supervising. The answer should be specific to your activity, not a generic sales message.
Medical screening is part of the booking decision
The official scuba guidelines require every diver to complete the prescribed medical form. If any answer is “yes”, physician approval is required under that process. If you are unsure how a condition, pregnancy, recent illness, surgery or medicine affects diving, get advice from a suitably qualified medical professional before paying. A website or salesperson cannot provide personal clearance.
Do not hide a medical detail to protect a non-refundable booking. First obtain the current form and programme rules, then make the payment decision.
There is no useful universal scuba age rule
The amended Andaman guidelines apply different age arrangements to different categories of dive centre. Recognised training-agency programmes follow the relevant agency standards, while another category has its own age range. Guardian approval is required for minors.
Therefore, a claim such as “all children above one fixed age can dive” is incomplete. A family should ask for the exact programme, centre category, current minimum age, equipment sizing, guardian process and instructor decision. The Andaman with kids guide covers the wider family itinerary and beach checks.
Certified divers should still verify the session
Give the centre your certification level, logbook and date of the most recent dive. The official guidelines require an orientation dive for some certified divers with limited logged experience or a recent gap. Ask what the centre requires before choosing a site or paying for several dives.
Do not select a dive from a famous site name alone. Current permission, weather, sea conditions, participant experience and the centre's decision control what is suitable that day.
Snorkelling: simpler does not mean automatic
Snorkelling is the first comparison when you want surface-based viewing and do not want a scuba programme. It can still involve a boat, an unfamiliar entry, fins, a mask, current and open water. Ask whether the plan starts from shore or boat, how the safe area is defined, what flotation is provided and how closely participants are supervised.
Tell the operator honestly about swimming confidence. “Non-swimmer” can describe very different levels of comfort, and a calm-looking surface does not prove that the water is suitable. If the briefing, mask fit or water entry does not feel manageable, stop before entering. A viewing boat or beach day is a reasonable alternative.
Sea walking: check the complete process
Sea walking is not simply walking on a beach under water. The full experience may involve boat or platform access, specialised equipment, an underwater route and direct supervision. Ask how participants get into and out of the water, what the current health and age restrictions are, how communication works underwater and what the stop signal is.
Do not assume that avoiding a scuba cylinder removes every health or access consideration. The actual activity's current rules and screening control participation.
Glass-bottom boats and other viewing trips
A glass-bottom or other viewing boat is the first comparison for a traveller who wants to remain out of the water. It can also be the more practical group choice when only some people want to swim. This does not guarantee easy boarding, a smooth ride, clear visibility or marine sightings.
Before paying, check the boarding point and steps, seating, shade, flotation equipment, trip boundary, weather decision and poor-visibility cancellation policy. A person with limited mobility should ask for the complete route from road to seat rather than only whether the boat is “accessible”.
Kayaking and motorised water sports
Kayaking is a route and paddling decision. Ask whether the session is in daylight or low light, what the route is, who leads it, what flotation and communication equipment are carried, and how the group returns if the weather changes. Do not treat a night-kayaking photograph as proof that the activity is currently permitted or appropriate on your date.
For parasailing, jet skiing or another motorised activity, ask for the operator's current permission for that exact activity, the operating area, equipment, passenger restrictions, briefing and weather threshold. The Tourism Department publishes activity-specific policies and standard operating procedures; the operator should be able to explain which current rule applies.
Which island should you use?
Official sources list water activities around Swaraj Dweep (Havelock Island), Shaheed Dweep (Neil Island) and Sri Vijaya Puram (Port Blair). That does not make every activity available on every island or every day.
| Base | Why compare it | Trip-planning trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Swaraj Dweep | The official island page lists the broadest mix among these three bases | Keep a separate activity window instead of forcing it onto a ferry day |
| Shaheed Dweep | Official district guidance lists scuba and snorkelling; Bharatpur is an activity-side comparison | Do not add the island only for one unconfirmed activity |
| Sri Vijaya Puram | Official tourism guidance lists several water and boat activities around the city | Confirm the actual departure point and avoid confusing a city stay with an island activity site |
If water activity is a priority, a comfortable plan is to reserve one flexible morning or day on the chosen island and keep a shore-based alternative. Use the Havelock Island guide, Neil Island guide or Port Blair guide to decide the base before choosing an activity.
How to verify an operator
The Tourism Department publishes a location-wise directory of registered water-sport operators. Use it as a starting point, not as automatic proof of current permission. On 5 September 2026, several entries displayed permission-expiry dates that had already passed.
- Ask for the operator's exact legal or registered name, not only a beach counter or reseller name.
- Match the operator, island and activity against the official directory.
- Check the displayed permission validity. If it has expired or is unclear, ask the Tourism Department and operator for current proof.
- For scuba, confirm that the dive centre's registration and supporting certificates are current.
- Ask who conducts the activity and what current qualification applies.
- Get the full price, inclusions, taxes, photos or videos, transport and cancellation rule in writing.
A directory listing is not a quality ranking. It does not replace checking the actual programme, equipment, staff, conditions and terms.
Scuba-centre safety questions
The current scuba guidelines require registered centres to maintain emergency and safety arrangements, including oxygen, first aid, an emergency action plan, communication, trained staff and maintained equipment. A traveller does not need to inspect a technical workshop, but should ask clear questions:
- Who is the instructor or supervisor, and what active qualification do they hold?
- What is the emergency action plan for this location?
- Where are oxygen, first aid and communication equipment kept?
- How is equipment size and fit checked before entering the water?
- When was the breathing-air quality last tested?
- Who cancels or changes the activity when site or weather conditions are unsuitable?
- Will I receive a proper receipt naming the centre and service?
Vague answers, pressure to conceal health information or refusal to identify the operating centre are sufficient reasons not to proceed.
Price comparisons without a misleading price list
There is no responsible single price for “scuba in Andaman” or “water sports”. Two offers may differ in training, water time, site access, transport, equipment, participant-to-staff arrangement, taxes, media and cancellation terms.
Compare a written total for the same activity and programme. Ask whether the quoted amount includes:
- transport from the stated meeting point
- boat or site-access charges
- training and direct supervision
- all required equipment
- taxes and official fees
- photos or videos, if important
- refund or rescheduling when the operator cancels for conditions
Do not choose the cheapest headline when it describes a different programme. Do not prepay merely because a seller promises that the activity always sells out.
Weather and itinerary protection
Water activities depend on local conditions and the operator's current decision. Build the itinerary so cancellation does not break the trip:
- Do not put a non-refundable activity immediately after an incoming ferry.
- Do not schedule scuba or a distant boat outing before an island departure.
- Keep the Andaman beach guide or a road-accessible island plan as the fallback.
- Recheck the activity, meeting point and conditions on the previous day and again before leaving.
- Use the best time to visit Andaman guide for seasonal trade-offs without expecting guaranteed weather.
Responsible activity rules
The scuba guidelines prohibit touching, damaging or collecting coral and marine life. Apply the same low-impact principle to every activity. Do not stand on coral, chase wildlife, take shells or accept a staged wildlife interaction. Follow the guide's route, current protected-area rules and on-site instructions.
At the shore, use designated safe areas and follow current warning signs and lifeguard instructions. Supervise children continuously. Do not enter the water at night merely because the beach looks calm or another group is doing it.
Book in this order
- Choose the experience: surface, underwater, paddling or boat viewing.
- Check personal health, age, swimming-confidence and access constraints before payment.
- Choose the island inside the wider Andaman itinerary.
- Identify the actual operator and verify current permission for the activity.
- Get the programme, meeting point, inclusions, total and cancellation terms in writing.
- Keep a weather-safe alternative and avoid a fragile ferry-day booking.
- Complete the honest medical or eligibility process and attend the full briefing.
- Stop if the actual setup does not match what was confirmed.
Frequently asked questions
Which water activity is best in Andaman?
There is no universal best. Choose snorkelling for surface viewing, introductory scuba for supervised underwater training, sea walking for a different guided underwater format, a viewing boat to stay out of the water, or kayaking for paddling. Eligibility, current permission and conditions can rule out any option.
Can a non-swimmer do scuba or sea walking?
Do not rely on a blanket yes. Tell the actual operator your water confidence and ask for the programme's current swimming, health and eligibility requirements. Complete the required screening and briefing. If you are uncomfortable with the process, choose a boat-viewing or shore activity.
What is the minimum age for scuba diving in Andaman?
There is no single minimum that applies to every programme. The official guidelines use different arrangements for different dive-centre categories, and recognised programmes follow their training-agency standards. Confirm the exact programme, current age rule, equipment fit and guardian process.
Do I need scuba certification?
You do not need an existing certification to join a suitable introductory training dive, but you remain an uncertified trainee under supervision. Independent certified-diver activities require the relevant certification and logbook checks.
How do I find a registered operator?
Start with the Tourism Department's location-wise water-sport operator directory. Match the exact name, activity and location, then check whether the displayed permission is still valid. Ask for current proof when the date is expired or unclear.
Should I book water activities before reaching Andaman?
You can research and reserve in advance after verifying the operator and terms, but do not treat advance payment as a guarantee of operation. Keep the cancellation or rescheduling rule in writing and protect ferry days from weather-dependent commitments.
